Ephesians 5:15, “So be very careful how you live. Do not live like those who are not wise, but live wisely.”
Whoever said “Sticks and stones can break your bones, but words can never hurt you” was wrong.
Words can be deceptive or honest. Overlooked or emphasized. Obvious or between the lines. Exclaimed or whispered. Screamed or prayed. Words can leave scars deeper than knife wounds or bring euphoric joy.
Now, as a writer, I love words. I write and erase them, remove and repeat them, expand them and squeeze them. I love the sound of words, phrases, and sentences, and sometimes can get carried away with them. Writers are warned not to get too carried away with wordiness. Today though, we’re going to look at how it’s okay to make each day a wordy day.
Let’s start by recognizing that there are words in their own category that we can keep with us throughout each day, without ever getting too wordy, and words that can bring us continual joy instead of cutting like a knife. God-breathed words!
“All Scripture is inspired by God [God-breathed] and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work”- 2 Timothy 3:16-17.
We don't need to change any of the truths in God's Word. They're always relevant, always "up to date," always true and life-changing- Matthew 24:35; Hebrews 4:12.
Now, how can we have that kind of wordy day each day, all day?
Begin your wordy day each morning by drinking in several passages of Scripture along with your morning breakfast. It's so important to start your day “on the right foot” because a good beginning can affect your whole day. There is no better way to start your day, than with thoughts of the Lord.
Remain wordy throughout the day. Ponder verses you’ve memorized or learn some new ones. Post them in visible places in your home, car, or office. As a parent without a minute to yourself, a busy student, a father with a demanding work schedule, or a grandparent who can’t believe how quickly the days pass without prayer and Bible study, take time throughout the day to get wordy with God.
Make wordy decisions by testing all the advice you get or give yourself, using God’s Word to lead you. Good or bad, we all, at some point, consider ourselves philosophers or theologians with sage advice. Let’s make sure when we share our words, we are not using the worlds ideas and wrapping them up as “Christian”. Let's be good theologians, studying God's Word carefully, prayerfully, and regularly, so we can discern errors when we hear them or use them.
Let’s also use wordy therapy when we’re dealing with fears, insecurities, anger, following the wrong passions, and all the other things we can feel as a person living in a world filled with sin.
“God's Word will always accomplish its purposes in our lives. It judges us when we refuse to repent, and it changes us when we submit to its truth (Isaiah 55:10-11). I can't change myself. But God's Spirit and His Word can change me. When I actively seek that change, I show my love for the Lord (John 14:21).”- biblelovenotes.com
Worldliness comes naturally. Wordiness requires intentional attitudes and actions to renew our minds in God's Word- Romans 12:1-2. Have a wordy type of day and go ahead and dive into God’s Word, it will bring you lots of joy and a spirit of peace.
As you let each day be a wordy day the best way to keep it going is diving into the Bible. There we can find all the right words that can get us through each day. Let's continue our study with lesson 4 on our Godly Relationships study.
