I Am a Christian But….

Luke 9:26, “If anyone is ashamed of me and my message, the Son of Man will be ashamed of that person when he returns in his glory and in the glory of the Father and the holy angels.”

When it's completely acceptable or part of the norm or when you're surrounded by your church family it's easy to stand up and claim ‘I am a Christian’.

But what about the times when you are around those (neighborhood, work, etc.) who look down on Christianity, think Christians are close minded, or are judgmental people. Times you are surrounded by friends who may think it's uncool or boring and you already have your own doubts. Do you cower and keep your mouth shut or do you hold onto your faith and proudly represent Jesus?

I read this online once and it spoke loud and clear to me. It is how many people live their life in this world and makes me think, ‘have I ever done any of these things in my life?’ I am a Christian but…

Isn't it funny how simple it is for people to trash God and then wonder why the world's going to hell.

Isn't it funny how we believe what the newspapers say, but question what the Bible says.

Isn't it funny how everyone wants to go to heaven, provided they do not have to believe, think, say, or do anything the Bible says. Or is it scary?

Isn't it funny how someone can say "I believe in God" but still follow satan (who, by the way, also "believes" in God)!

Isn't it funny how you can send a thousand jokes through e-mail, and they spread like wildfire, but when you start sending messages regarding the Lord, people think twice about sharing.

Isn't it funny how the lewd, crude, vulgar and obscene pass freely through cyberspace, but the public discussion of Jesus is suppressed in the school and workplace.

Isn't it funny how someone can be so fired up for Christ on Sabbath but be an invisible Christian the rest of the week.

Isn't it funny how I can be more worried about what other people think of me than what God thinks of me.

As we grow older, we become wiser. Yet there are times when we were younger that we may have been afraid to speak out about our faith. I was lucky and my parents put me through Christian schools through my middle and high school years, so talking about my faith was easier. But there were times that I shied away from sharing the Lord when I was in public places. As a Christian writer, blogger, and speaker, it has become easier, but I still have to stop and ask myself, ‘In all I do, do my actions match my words - I am a Christian...

If you ask 10 people what they think about Christianity, you will get 10 different answers. Approximately 65% of Americans claim to be Christians but very few act like they are. Being a Christian doesn't mean you are perfect, it means you are forgiven. Helping others when they need it and standing up for what you believe, even if someone is offended.

When you claim you're a Christian leave the but behind you. Instead take time to let Jesus into your heart and be a better version of yourself. Slow down and welcome Jesus into your life enjoying all the Lord has provided.

Being a Christian, applying the Word of God to our lives. Striving to live in obedience to Him. Making an effort to spend time with the Lord, to grow in Him, and not remain stagnant in our faith, making time daily to read the Bible & pray. Being a Christian and walking the walk not just talking the talk. It’s not just showing up on Sabbath or the big holidays in church and putting on your best. It’s living day to day with the Lord in your life, not only at home, but in ways others can see Jesus living through you.

Being a Christian is not being ashamed. There is a story of a father and son who always went to a basketball game around Christmas every year. At one game, when the son was in his early teenage years, there came a moment in the game when the team made a great shot and scored. The father jumped up immediately shouting and whooping it up, looking for anyone around him to high five. The son slumped in his chair hiding his face, “I don’t know this guy,” he said, as many onlookers were watching the fathers over the top excitement.

This story fits most of us in some way or another. When we were kids, our parents may have embarrassed us. We’ve embarrassed our own kids, and yes, I sometimes hide my face when my husband is doing over the top goofy things while in public, playfully claiming “I don’t know him”. But there is a good lesson we can learn from this.

As a Christian do you jump up and shout for joy or hide your face in embarrassment when you’re around others who are praising Jesus. Do you tend to distance yourself from Jesus when you begin to feel a little discomfort from the world or people around you? When you are in your home or around fellow believers do you praise Jesus, but then turn around and follow what the world is doing? I am a Christian, but….

Paul speaks very clearly on this matter when he addresses Timothy, in 2 Timothy 1. “So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord. And don’t be ashamed of me, either, even though I’m in prison for him. With the strength God gives you, be ready to suffer with me for the sake of the Good News. For God saved us and called us to live a holy life. He did this, not because we deserved it, but because that was his plan from before the beginning of time—to show us his grace through Christ Jesus.” -v. 8-9.

God chose Paul to be a preacher and teacher and to share the Good News and He has chosen each of us to do the same. It’s such Good News to share. Being united with Jesus means we are unashamed of Him, and we can join Him in His great victory over sin and death, no matter what suffering comes. That means that no matter what suffering comes, we can boldly cling to Jesus knowing as Paul says, “he is able to guard what has been entrusted to me until that day”- v.12. The Good News, you have a Savior who suffered in your place and secured a future for you! Knowing this makes our Lord worthy of my unwavering allegiance to Him.

This is the way you will get the I am a Christian but…

-          I am a Christian, but sometimes I judge others

-          I am a Christian, but I say things I shouldn’t

-          I am a Christian, but I sometimes struggle to trust God’s plan for my life

-          I am a Christian, but sometimes I feel anger and bitterness

Being a Christian doesn’t mean you’re perfect, it means God gives you grace.

I may not go and shout it from the mountain tops or start whooping it up, but I will tell the story, I will share the Good News, I will pray that the Lord will give me moments every day to share with those around me, of Jesus and His love. Yes, suffering will come as this world goes further and further into sin and following the devil, and as Christians it will become more and more difficult to stand up for Jesus. But as Paul wrote in verse 12, “he (Jesus) is able to guard what has been entrusted to me until that day.” The Lord will guard His people, He will protect us when the hard times come, and we will have victory on the day of His return. He is not ashamed of us, let us not be ashamed of Him. I AM A CHRISTIAN…I will sing His praises and sing of His glory, come what may.

What does it take to find God and start a relationship with God? God has made it very clear its in the Bible that you can find God and begin to experience His love for you. Jesus says, “I’m standing at the door and I’m knocking. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in.” Every day is a new opportunity to learn something about our creator and Savior. Let's finish our Jesus and His I Am statements with our last study Jesus says I am The Vine.
