Proverbs 17:22 “A happy heart is like good medicine, but a broken spirit drains your strength.”
Joy, humor, and laughter should be part of everyone’s spiritual life. They are gifts from God and help us enjoy creation. -James Martin
A good joke, giggles of children, the infectious laugh of a baby, the joys of laughter shared with your spouse, funny stories, silly accidents, anything that causes true, deep-down, laughter from the heart and belly. Laughter that can cause your eyes to water sides to hurt and face to smile, is good for the soul.
Did you know that God has created a beautiful harmony with scripture and our bodies? Proverbs tells us a merry heart is like good medicine and science has proven that laughter improves blood flow, blood sugar levels, immune systems response, sleep patterns, and has helped cancer patients. WebMD tells us that we change physically when we laugh. We stretch muscles throughout our face and body and we breathe faster sending more oxygen to our muscles. They say that among many advantages it can also be like a mild workout. Now, I like that kind of workout.
No matter our walk in life, we will all have crazy moments, stressful moments, difficult circumstances and the moments we are in now. I think God created laughter to help us experience special bursts of enjoyment to release those moments from our soul and help improve our health. Laughter can break us out of the ruts we fall into, lift our sadness, pull us out of depression and change our negative atmosphere or situation and turn it into a positive one.
Did you know the average woman spends approximately $13,000 on cosmetics during her lifetime? I like what Charles Gordy has to say, “A smile is an inexpensive way to change your looks.” And smiles and laughter can make us more attractive than all those cosmetics. Victor Hugo adds, “Laughter is the sun which drives the winter from the human face.”
We will all grow old and one thing we all get to look forward to is wrinkles. The first of those wrinkles will appear on our face from repeated facial expressions. Another good reason to remember Proverbs, laughing, smiling and frowning all produce wrinkles. We can choose our wrinkles by either telling a story of inner joy and peace or anger and displeasure. Yes, we will have those moments of displeasure, but I would rather choose wrinkles of joy more often than sadness, by making my life a reflection of a joyful heart full of Jesus.
Today, let laughter be a sunbeam to your soul. -Thorman Mann. Remind yourself of what has brought the most laugh lines to your face. Let your smile and laughter not only be good medicine to yourself but to those around you.
