Proverbs 16:24, “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb making people happy and healthy.”
For most of us we grew up knowing who Mary Poppins was. Although a fictional character in a movie, she showed us that there can be a sweeter side of life when we look for it.
It seems this world has become full of bitterness and criticism. It seems the future is seen through eyes of negativity and as Christians we are shown a future of fear and doom before the Lord comes.
There may be some dark days we will face but wouldn't it be nice to have someone with a joyful, creative optimism that can show us the positive side, who can remind us that, ‘just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down’.
David wrote in his Psalm 19:7-10 a similar saying, “The teachings of the Lord are perfect; they give new strength. The rules of the Lord can be trusted; they make plain people wise. The orders of the Lord are right; they make people happy. The commands of the Lord are pure; they light up the way. Respect for the Lord is good; it will last forever. The judgments of the Lord are true; they are completely right. They are worth more than gold, even the purest gold. They are sweeter than honey, even the finest honey.”
So many times, the Bible is seen as sour. Many preachers teach the gloom and doom of not following God. We read so many verses in the Old Testament of God's wrath on so many tribes and so many negative things that happen. We hear sermons filled with bitter, hard to swallow words of how our lives are lived in a sinful nature and what we “have” to do to be more like Christ. They say, study the Bible, it’s medicine to treat what's wrong.
It's refreshing when someone comes around and shares the positive of God's Word showing the sweeter things God has for us, Psalm 34:8, “Examine and see how good the Lord is. Happy is the person who trusts him.” The truth is, the Bible is full of so much more than gloom and doom. It's a gourmet meal, a culinary delight, sweet to the soul.
We sing, ‘Jesus is the sweetest name I know,’ but so many tend to see the sour and overlook the sweet. Jesus said He is the Bread of Life and those who hunger for spiritual sustenance find a refreshing taste through God's Word. We have the opportunity to share it to a starving world lost in the negative gloom and doom.
David shows us in Psalm 19 how God revealed Himself, first through creation and then through scripture. There are times in scripture that we see some of the darker times, but there are so many more times we can see God's goodness and light shine in a world lost, and the spoonful of sugar, the sweetest words we have, Jesus is coming again to save us from this world gone sour.
We need a daily dose of the Bible because it can renew our mind, restore our hope, and refresh our soul.
Study the Bible for spiritual growth. Through God's Word, He can help us grow to be more Christlike. God's Word helps us know the truth, live out the truth, and invest the truth in others. Through study of the scriptures, we grow our faith, character, and ministry- 2 Timothy 2:15.
Study the Bible for spiritual stability. This quote from Daily His Disciple got me thinking, “if we don't know what the Bible says about who God is, and what he can do, we'll have shallow faith that won't withstand the test of time or trials. We'll make emotionally driven decisions, instead of Biblical discernment.”
When we study the Bible, we become anchored in Jesus and our souls find spiritual stability, keeping us from being tossed about with all the doctrines, speakers, and so much more that come at us. Any “medicine” that comes our way will taste like that spoonful of sugar because we know the sweet name of Jesus- Ephesians 4:14.
Study the Bible for spiritual maturity. Jesus tells us we are the light of the world, we are called to present the good news, the gospel story. Yet, how can we be a Christlike example to others if we don't take time to learn the scriptures for ourselves? We absolutely must learn how to study the Bible and apply it to our lives. Then we can share it with others. Here's the sweet, positive side. The more we study, the more we know Jesus and the more we love Him the more we become like Him- Hebrews 5:12-14.
Just like Mary Poppins said, just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.
Today let's do something a little different with our Bible study. We will pick up our regular Bible study next week. For today, think of your favorite story in the Bible or maybe you have a favorite book or chapter or even some favorite verses you like to go to when talking about Jesus or sharing Jesus or just simply because it's inspiring to you or lifts your spirits. Take time, it doesn't have to be a long time, and read it again. Ask the Lord to show you something you may never have seen before or let it renew your hope in Jesus.
