“But our homeland is in heaven, and we are waiting for our Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, to come from heaven. By his power to rule all things, he will change our humble bodies and make them like his own glorious body.” - Philippians 3:20-21
There’s no place like home. For so many of us this is how we feel about our homes. We enjoy being away but we love being able to just kick off our shoes and relax on our furniture and just enjoy the comforts we’ve built around our homes. Even in the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy longed to be back home even though she was in a world of wonder and adventure.
My family loves our yearly vacation to Camp-meeting but after ten days I begin to miss our home and the security and my bed. I remember one year we had just moved a month before vacation and after a week I just wanted to be home. I had lost the images and feelings of home and longed to be back. We were just getting used to our new home and its surroundings and I wanted to get settled.
How about your vacations? As fun and great as they are, no car or plane can seem to get us home fast enough. Why is that? I believe it’s because we are creatures of habit. Home is safe, home is comfort, home is familiarity. Yes getting away is exciting and the change always good, but being home is so much better.
We are not the only ones who long for home. There is someone who misses us so much they can’t wait for us to come home. Jesus is in Heaven, longing to bring us home to Him. Longing to show us the comforts and security He has been preparing for us. We all know these earthly homes are temporary and just as we long to come to them either daily after work, or after a vacation, we need to be longing for our permanent home with Jesus because it will be oh so much better than anything we have now.
I do enjoy my home here and love kicking my shoes off and relaxing but I long for this crazy sinful world to be over and to be able to be home with Jesus. I long for the day I don’t have to worry about my children’s safety or dealing with bills, work, lying people, or Satan ever tempting us. This world is only temporary, my Jesus is forever!
