Refreshed

Jeremiah 31:25, “For I have given rest to the weary and joy to the sorrowing.”

I love the word refresh; to renew, rejuvenate, restore. It's a great feeling when you think about it.

When you have a good night’s sleep and wake up refreshed. After a hot day, a cool shower leaves you refreshed. A good walk outside taking in fresh air can leave you refreshed. A nice cool drink of water is refreshing. Then there's the reboots to your computer or smartphones giving things a fresh start.

The word refresh means, “to give new strength”, “to give energy to”, “to rejuvenate”.

Sometimes as Christians we need a reboot in life as well. We feel tired and exhausted. It is from Jesus that we can find that reboot. Matthew 11:28, “Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.”

One of the greatest ways the enemy can hinder our walk with God is to keep us busy, which makes us tired, which makes us ineffective for the Lord. When we are exhausted, we spend less time in the Word and more time snapping at those around us. Without realizing it distraction and busyness fills our lives like a slow and steady drip and we become tired and empty.

Let's see how we can be refreshed through Jesus today, so we can feel less worn out and tattered and refueled for the Lord.

1.     Be refreshed in the Word of God- Psalm 19:7, “The instructions of the Lord are perfect, reviving the soul. The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the simple.”

Reading the Bible gives us spiritual refreshment. It won't always be an emotional experience every time you open the Bible. That is not the point; this is about replenishment. Reading the Bible is about restoration, seeing new perspectives on life, getting direction from God. Reading the Bible refreshes your soul.

2.     Look to Jesus and find refreshment- Isaiah 26:3, “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!”

When you look to Jesus you must first and foremost believe He is your ultimate source of rest and refreshment. This can come when you faithfully spend time with Him in fellowship. God's presence will refresh you- Acts 3:20. God is sovereign and everything that is happening worldwide and, in your life, will not catch Him by surprise. Look to Him in faith and He will give you all the refreshment you need.

3.     Be refreshed through prayer- Philippians 4:6-7, “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.”

We know there is power in prayer so why do we put it off so many times? Is it because there just isn't enough time?

Look what the latest research has found. People in the United States check their Facebook, Twitter, and other social media 17 times per day. That's once every waking hour. What do you think would happen if you prayed 17 times a day instead of checking your social media?

John Piper has said, “One of the great uses of Twitter and Facebook will be to prove at the last day that prayerlessness was not from lack of time.”

Now add in all the binge watching or shopping online or other outlets we all waste time on. I know that we all have more time for prayer, it simply comes down to what we make time for, and prayer is part of our time management. Prayer refreshes the soul. Even Jesus took time to be alone with his Father in prayer and refreshment.

4.     Jesus renews in us hope each day- Lamentations 3:22-23, “The faithful love of the Lord never ends! His mercies never cease. Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning.”

Psalm 143:8, “Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you.”

God uses the seasons to reveal His character and each day He promises to renew and refresh us. Before our feet hit the ground in the morning, the Lord has already given us a reboot to start new and fresh. Tomorrow is over with, today is a clean slate, new life.

Do you want to be refreshed, spiritually, and physically? Whatever it looks like, God will be faithful to give us refreshment when we need it. It's as simple as reading God's Word, spending time with Jesus, and prayer.

How will you carve out precious time in your day to find refreshment, restoration, and renewal in Jesus. When you do, you will see God show up in big ways.

Hopefully you are still finding time to read the Bible, have a Bible study or have been following what I have been doing through the year. As we close the year I encourage you to take the next few weeks and go digging for the treasures on your own. Open the Bible and ask the Holy Spirit to lead you to inspiration the Lord has for you. Just remember to make time with Him each day, more than just a devotion or two.
