The Language of the Cross

Romans 8:8-9 "But God shows his great love for us in this way: Christ died for us while we were still sinners. So through Christ we will surely be saved from God’s anger, because we have been made right with God by the blood of Christ’s death."

A pastor once said, “Nobody ever learns who they are by being told. They must be shown.”

This goes back to the saying we all have heard, “Actions speak louder than words.” A spouse shows love to their spouse not only by listening to them but by their kind actions. Parents show their children they are valued by caring for them, providing for them, helping them. And the list goes on, coworkers and bosses, teachers and students, friends, even coaches can show athletes their potential when they invest time in helping them improve and learn. With each action of time given to help another, by showing interest in their interests, just by acts of kindness we are showing we love or value that person or we are helping them reach their potential. Romans 15:19, “So let us try to do what makes peace and helps one another.” Ephesians 5:1-2, “You are God’s children whom he loves, so try to be like him. Live a life of love just as Christ loved us and gave himself for us as a sweet-smelling offering and sacrifice to God.” Titus 3:2, “…to live in peace, and to be gentle and polite to all people.”

On the flip side our actions or words can also tear a person down. By ignoring them, by spending all your time wrapped up in your wants or desires, even by speaking negatively we can do more harm than good. Romans 13:10 says ‘Love does no harm to a neighbor.’ Titus 3:2 “Slander no one, avoid fighting…” Ephesians 4:27 “Give no opportunity to the devil.”

When we want to be shown who we are, and our value, Paul clearly tells us how we can find it, through God's eyes. God didn't just use His words and tell us; He demonstrated His love to us. Although we are sinners and far from perfect, Christ died for you, He died for me. God chose the language of the cross through the death of His own son to not only speak but show us His love for us and who we are and what our value to Him is.

This world has become a mess of mixed messages and confusing actions. We have become a broken people in a broken world. We have lost who we are, what our worth is, and love for others has become an up and down cycle. Sure, we might feel loved by our family and even our children love, but the true love spoken so long ago is slowly disappearing.

Our pastor asked one Sabbath, "How valuable do you think you are? Do you place your value on a scale of your accomplishments, your job, your friends, or social standing? Is your value higher if you're popular and have the best the world offers you?" Most of us would probably put ourselves in an extremely low category of value. We've sinned, we have lost our way, we've struggled, we are far from perfect. Aside from our family and maybe our friends we probably would put ourselves on the low side of how valuable we are.

Well, I'm here to tell you that we all need to raise the bar on what we feel our value is. Galatians 3:26-27 says, “You (we) were all baptized into Christ, and so you (we) we're all clothed with Christ. This means that you (we) all are children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.”

Did you catch that? The Bible tells us we are children of God. The King of Kings, Lord of Lords, the Creator of our world. God has adopted us into His family as His children and loves us as much as His own son, Jesus. If you want to know your value just look to God. He values you so much that He has made you part of His family and all you have to do is accept Him and believe He is God- John 1:12. Romans 8:14, “The true children of God are those who let Gods spirit lead them.”

There is no greater language of love than when God speaks it, through the cross and adopting us as His own. You are loved, we are loved and valuable because we are children of God. Know, that no matter what you are going through, yesterday, today, or tomorrow, God one day, has promised to come and bring His children home. We will get to see Him face to face. Today, speak the language of love through your actions and know, even in a world of sin and with your mistakes you are loved with an everlasting love. Let Jesus in today and what He has promised no man can ever take away. You are God's family and have an inheritance above anything this world can give.
