Psalm 34:8 "Examine and see how good the Lord is. Happy is the person who trusts him."
We, as humans can be an emotional lot, can't we? I have a bad habit, when I'm out and about, that I am trying to work on, I people watch. It is interesting what one person can observe when watching others. For instance, have you noticed when someone seems sad or discouraged or maybe having a bad day or have received bad news, they tend to walk looking downward? They avoid eye contact and move in ways to avoid others. Yet when someone is happy, they seem to walk with a bounce in their step and they are looking toward everything and everyone. They also are the friendliest with a hi for everyone they see.
I know for myself when I'm upset or discouraged, I don't feel like going anywhere. I don't have the desire to write or sometimes I just want to veg the day away on my phone or watching a movie. When things are good or I'm happy or having a good day, I get more writing done, my house gets cleaned or chores I have put off- completed. I have a bounce in my step. How about you, do you ever feel controlled by your emotions?
Psalm 3:3 is a beautiful verse. “But you, oh Lord, are a shield about me, my glory, and the one who lifts my head.”
No matter what is happening around us, God is our shield and protector. It's comforting to know Jesus understands us and knows exactly what we're going through with our emotions. Hebrews 4:15 tells us that Jesus understands our weaknesses because He lived through the same things we face in our world. But if you notice in Psalm, God not only is our Protector, He lifts our heads. He will help us out of the down days and help us look upward because He is the one who can turn our circumstances around. He will lift us out of whatever has us down.
It is by allowing the Holy Spirit in to help make decisions we find a balance in our emotions. When you've been angry have you said things you now regret? Or possibly question God or let your face slip when something tragic happened. Maybe your opinion about someone has caused a stumbling block as you have stopped them from doing something or hurt their feelings through idle gossip. Yes, we are an emotional people, but we can't let those emotions be our decision-making tools.
Proverbs 3:5 tells us to, trust in the Lord with all our hearts and do not lean on our own understanding. Why? Because so often our actions are led by our emotions. That is why in Galatians 15:16 we are told to let the Holy Spirit guide our lives, so we won't do what our sinful nature craves by letting our emotions lead our decisions. Proverbs also has many verses about being wise, making wise choices, and not following fools or foolish ideas.
Although we can be easily led by our emotions when we ask Jesus to live in our lives, He has promised to be our shield and help us navigate through them. So, on those emotional down days when you feel you can't face the world and your head is downcast. Find joy knowing Jesus is by your side lifting you up. Be glad you have a loving Father who knows you so well that He can help you through everything and anything.
I'm going to end with a chapter in Psalm because I feel David sums it up great Psalm 139.
1 “Lord, you have examined me and know all about me.
2 You know when I sit down and when I get up. You know my thoughts before I think them.
3 You know where I go and where I lie down. You know everything I do.
4 Lord, even before I say a word, you already know it.
5 You are all around me—in front and in back—and have put your hand on me.
6 Your knowledge is amazing to me; it is more than I can understand.
7 Where can I go to get away from your Spirit? Where can I run from you?
8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there. If I lie down in the grave, you are there.
9 If I rise with the sun in the east and settle in the west beyond the sea,
10 even there you would guide me. With your right hand you would hold me.
11 I could say, “The darkness will hide me. Let the light around me turn into night.”
12 But even the darkness is not dark to you. The night is as light as the day; darkness and light are the same to you.
13 You made my whole being; you formed me in my mother’s body.
14 I praise you because you made me in an amazing and wonderful way. What you have done is wonderful. I know this very well.
15 You saw my bones being formed as I took shape in my mother’s body. When I was put together there,
16 you saw my body as it was formed. All the days planned for me were written in your book before I was one day old.
17 God, your thoughts are precious to me. They are so many!
18 If I could count them, they would be more than all the grains of sand. When I wake up, I am still with you.
19 God, I wish you would kill the wicked! Get away from me, you murderers!
20 They say evil things about you. Your enemies use your name thoughtlessly.
21 Lord, I hate those who hate you; I hate those who rise up against you.
22 I feel only hate for them; they are my enemies.
23 God, examine me and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
24 See if there is any bad thing in me. Lead me on the road to everlasting life.
