Time Marches On

Proverbs 3:25 “Keep your eyes focused on what is right, and look straight ahead to what is good.”

As I get older and my children are now at the age I was when I had them, I have been asked, “Do you regret anything in the last 20 plus years? What would you do differently?”

I don't regret any of my choices and I know I wouldn't want to have done anything different because the life we've lived, and the choices made brought us to where we are now. But I do sometimes wish I might have responded differently to situations or handled things in a different way. Some choices I made I wish I hadn’t, but life moves forward and time marches on.

Now, we all have a choice to make about what we're going to focus on. We can either look back or look ahead. God is clear in Isaiah 43:18 & 25 in terms of how we should live today. He tells us to forget the past, don't dwell on it. Our past sins and mistakes are only for us to learn from and move forward. God has already forgiven and forgotten.

We are human though and it's easy to look back at our lives with regret or even a heavy heart if we haven't let go of that sin or sins. We constantly ask ourselves “What if …” “If only …”

To God there is no such thing as “what if or if only “. He has already moved on and has forgotten. Paul says in Philippians 3:13-14 that one thing he has to do is forget what lies behind and reach for what lies ahead. Paul lived his life for one goal, one prize and that was the call of God in Jesus Christ.

So, we've all made mistakes, bad choices, we've let temptation cause us to sin. But when we've allowed God in our lives and asked forgiveness, all the past is now the past and cannot be changed or erased. Even what we do today will be history tomorrow.

Today what will be your choice? Will you focus on your past and dwell in those choices or will you press on forward? For Christians we have a bright promise for our futures. A promise of a home in heaven and while on this earth a promise from God of forgiveness of sin and Salvation. Don't allow Satan to rob you of today's blessings and calling from God by letting him hold you in the past. Learn from the past and be a better person now or even look at the past with gratitude. God got you through it and it has made you who you are today.

You know the saying, “Life is a gift. You can't change the past, the future has yet to come, you only have today, which is the present”. We can't live by looking back, only by pressing forward.
